The Street Theatre project is run by The Freedom Theatre, in cooperation with Centro de Criacao para o Teatro e Artes de Rua, Portugal. With the aim of bringing theatre into the streets and involving community members in the whole production process, a unique performance is being created, infusing elements of strong physical, musical and visual storytelling – weaving in elements of poetry, circus, parkour, dance and thought-provoking art installations. This street theatre performance is the first of its kind in Occupied Palestine.
Performances, spanning at least two continents, are set to begin in August 2012, culminating in a Street Theatre Festival in Jenin in April 2013.
There’s Still the Child (working title) tells the story of a boy who rebels against the rules and expectations of his family and society. We follow this young boy’s journey of creating an alternative way of living, sharing in his imaginative and often surreal view of the world. As the boy becomes an adult we play witness to his continued struggle to find an identity and a place of belonging. There’s Still the Child will be a dynamic performance about freedom and oppression in the form of restrictions, specifically on movement, and asks the question: how can we find identity and hope for the future as an international community?
The Freedom Theatre, in cooperation with Centro de Criacao para o Teatro e Artes de Rua, will be presenting the new street theatre creation in Guimaraes, Portugal, European Capital of Culture 2012, in August.
While in Guimaraes The Freedom Theatre will engage in exchanges with local Portuguese community members and artists. During the rehearsal period the company will share their work in progress by making concerts and small performances in places where theatre does not normally reach.
The performance will later be staged in Jenin and tour to other parts of the West Bank. Performances are planned throughout Ramallah, Nablus and Bethlehem, with additional performances set to occur in conjunction with the Freedom Bus project.
