Applied Theatre

The Freedom Theatre has recently developed several theatre training programs for school teachers, mental health professionals and cultural workers. These programs are based within a framework of critical pedagogy and provide capacity building in applied theatre methods such as Theatre of the Oppressed, Playback Theatre, Drama Therapy, Psychodrama, Therapeutic Spiral Model, Drama in Education and Sociodrama. The aim is to use these methods for education, trauma response, social empowerment and cultural activism.

Our long-term goal is to work together with local and international partners to establish a regional centre that will offer capacity building in applied theatre and engage directly with communities throughout Palestine.

This centre will represent the first of its kind in the Arab world and will respond to the need for innovative, experiential and research-based training in the field of education, psychotherapy and cultural activism.

Drama in Education

Since the start in 2006, one of The Freedom Theatre’s aims has been to work together with the schools in the Jenin area, to introduce drama as a subject which would eventually be included in the curriculum. In autumn 2012 we are able to start offering a professional training programme for teachers and other educators, who will learn to use drama as a method in their teaching.

Playback Theatre

Playback Theatre is an interactive theatre approach used in over fifty countries as a tool for community building, dialogue and trauma recovery. In a Playback Theatre performance, audience members share thoughts, feelings, memories and personal accounts and then watch as a team of actors and musicians transform these experiences into improvised theatre pieces. The Freedom Theatre currently runs a training programme for professional actors who use Playback Theatre as a method to reach out to communities all over the West Bank.

Trauma Transformation

Through this extensive project, The Freedom Theatre teaches psychodrama methods with the aim of building capacity in trauma response for social workers, psychologists, child care workers and other mental health professionals in the Jenin area. Upon completion of the 18-month programme, participants are awarded an International Certificate in Trauma Therapy using the Therapeutic Spiral Model™.
