Who we are

The Freedom Theatre is a cultural centre in the heart of Jenin refugee camp, occupied Palestine. We believe in the power of the arts to change lives and societies. We build capacity in theatre, visual arts and pedagogics. We produce our own plays, exhibitions and films. We present these artistic products in Jenin, across Palestine and beyond. Together with the young in our community we build an alternative vision for the future.

What we do

Theatre productions

We produce plays that comment upon and challenge the realities of contemporary Palestinian society, while exploring various forms of artistic expressions. Past productions include original plays such as Return to Palestine, The Siege and Suicide Note from Palestine as well as adaptations of Animal Farm, Alice in Wonderland, Men in the Sun, The Island and The Caretaker.

Child & Youth

We put much emphasis on play as the foundation for creating a safe space where young people feel free to express themselves creatively. We work with children in our community from an early age through our playschool and after-school activities, nurturing the joyfulness and freedom that children have within them. We also offer pedagogical training to educators and others who meet young people in their profession.

Multimedia

Through training in photography, film and writing, we encourage young women and men in our community to explore new forms of creative self-expression. More intensive training is also offered to trainees who develop skills in teaching others. In our youth magazine Voices, young people express themselves through articles, poetry, essays, short stories and photography.

Generating Cultural Resistance

For the oppressed, the arts have always been a powerful tool for liberation. For us Palestinians, artistic expression is an integrated part of our quest for justice, equality and freedom. Through cultural resistance we can deconstruct an oppressive reality and make it comprehensible, which is the first step towards changing it. Then, we can dream, envision and create change together.
